Akram has been chosen ahead of highly regarded candidates such as Bangladesh’s former bowling coach in Ian Pont.

Akram was part of the Pakistan side who won their first Asia Cup in 2000. His career highlight was taking 5 wickets at Perth during a test match in the 1999 tour down under.

Akram has played for Surrey, Essex and Sussex at the county circuit.

Akram has also been a regular member of the Lashings World XI side.

The former pacer will also be helpful as a translator for Dav Whatmore as he is a capable linguist, having a strong grasp of both languages.
