I was at the OCG with 3 other KP members (Imran, Tabrez & Abrar) on Friday watching a 30 over game featuring the Lashings World XI where Mohammad Yousuf made a well complied 86*. It was a master class, batting stylishness of the highest order. The stand out features were the way he was able to predict length, manipulate the field & motor along at a good tick, but at the same time being in complete control of what he was doing. The sheer laziness of the high bat lift in stance made run making specifically seem like a piece of cake. Okay, the opposition he was up against were club bowlers with the odd player on the fringe of county cricket, but the club are Essex Premier Division champions for 3 years running so are one of the tougher clubs in the country, but Yousuf made them look very ordinary as he fluently milked his way to 86 not out.
The former Pakistan Captain was also good company & was willing to have a chat, sign autographs, and take pictures alongside us. Nice to see him going strong, but there is no hiding that his international days are long gone in fairness & in many respects understandably so.
Saqlain Mushtaq was also in action & the off spinner got 2 wickets in his 6 over spell. Imran Nazir made 30 & wasn’t able to repeat his heroics of 157 from 41 deliveries in his previous game for the club. Mohammad Akram was also in action & opened the bowling alongside Devon Malcom.
Other international players who are worth giving a mention are Lou Vincent who made a century opening the batting. The Kiwi international was in top form with his dynamic shots. His fellow New Zealander Ian Butler bowled outstandingly well to hold his nerve at the death as he sent down some lethal Yorkers to get his wickets during crunch moments which ultimately determined the outcome of the game. All of his 4 wickets disturbed the timber.
Henry Blofeld, the legendary broadcaster said on Saturday morning that this was the best Lashings game he has been at since joining the club as Brentwood fell short by 3 runs during a high scoring encounter.
It was an enjoyable day out & thankfully the weather stayed clear for 60 overs of eventful cricket in what has been a wet & miserable summer for the UK.
