On this day last year India defeated West Indies in
the ICC Champions Trophy at the Oval in London. It was a comprehensive victory
for MS Dhoni and company. Jadeja claimed five wickets while Dhawan scored a
successive match winning century. India qualified for the semi-finals with this
thumping win which also meant that Pakistan were eliminated from the eight team
championship with a game to spare and also in doing so becoming the first side
to be knocked out. This was the first India vs West Indies ODI game in England after
nearly 30 years following the 1983 Cricket World Cup final at the home of
cricket, when Kapil Dev and team India caused a shock upset in a low scoring classic
at the last 60 over World Cup encounter, consequently preventing Clive Lloyd’s
team from winning a third consecutive World Cup title in England.
