Yes, he can’t bat for others.

BUT he has had four long years to build a team for this event.

He hasn’t take anywhere near enough ownership in selection, been too much of a “yes” man.

There have been far too many controversial, inexplicable, unjustifiable, mysterious and incredibly frustrating selections in major tournaments.

Sometimes, even selecting particular players on personal friendships or selecting undeserving players to make him stand out individually in performance, it appears.

He will have to take some accountability.

Captaincy is not just about the performance of one person, but ten others too.

More impressive Test Captain than ODI Captain, not that I think there is a better choice. Better ODI batsman than Test batsman although consistent contributor in both.

In terms of:

Blocking
Nudging
Getting the odd cut and drive away
Power strokes
Improvising vs spin with reverse sweeps etc
Busy proactive use of crease
Premeditating

… Very good top class all round player, got the lot

Solid and dependable
Assertive and adventurous

Watchful and cautious
Versatile and adaptable

Gritty and patient
Innovative and inventive

His attacking game:

Lines the bowler up
Makes his mind difficult to read
Surprises the bowler
Does it when the bowler is not expecting
Selective, calculated and measured
Bides time, plays straight, watches it carefully
Knows what bowler is doing, how pitch playing, the field setting
Temperament to reign himself in despite having the ability to score quickly
Decisive in execution, full hearted
Strong fundamentals to expand on
Weighs up conditions, role, situation
Picks his moments cunningly and “packs a punch”

Bat grip
Bat lift
Get into position
Watches it like a hawk
Follow though

Off side, leg side, deep, advance and then hold shape or slog sweep

Strength against spin and medium pace, but finds a method against swing and pace through dogged determination, although more vulnerable here. Good enough to block, nudge, leave, duck and get the bad one away in reasonably controlled fashion vs pace. Blocking, hitting nudging – all round 3 dimensional game vs spin.

10 years since the first Twenty20 international. Eden Park 2005. Treated as a bit of late evening fun.

Friday, 6 February 2015

3 years since England were whitewashed in the UAE. Looking forward to their return here later this year.

Beating a number 1 ranked team
Not only beating but whitewashing them too
Away from home
In the highest form of the game
In the year they went on to draw in Sri Lanka and win in India

39 Pointers

Misbah 4-3 as captain in ODIs vs India, 3-3 vs Dhoni, 1-0 vs Kohli

His scores in last 5 innings vs them: 16, 2, 39, 22, 1
Not been at his best vs them, but top scored in team innings twice in last 7 ODIs vs them, both chasing, in defeat though

Wahab Riaz 5-46 in last India-Pakistan World Cup game.
Turns it on at the big stage.
Remember Champions Trophy spell vs West Indies at the Oval?

Can Misbah do something that Imran, Sohail, Wasim, Waqar and Afridi couldn't? And that at a time when India are defending champions.

Nothing can match Mohali. Never had they met so deep in the competition.

Pak are playing their first game in Australia after 5 years whereas Ind have played 3 lengthy tri series+test series here since 08

India had to wait 28 years for their second. Pakistan will have to wait much longer one will imagine.

2007 WT20, 2011 WC, 2013 CT = Misbah Pak leading run scorer and tournament won by India.

India – only lost 1 game in their last 15 ICC ODI tournament games.

Dhoni has won 12 of his last 13 games in ICC Events.

19 months after Birmingham. A win seems far stretched. But an improvement will be nice.

Miandad 40 from 110 & 38 from 64, Inzamam 41 from 93, Razzaq 12 from 29 & Younis 13 from 34 - slow scoring offences by Pak players in WC games vs Ind

They beat us in the 2010 Asia Cup by 2 wickets
They beat us in the 2011 World Cup by 29 runs
They beat us in the 2012 World T20 by 8 wickets
They beat us in the 2013 Champions Trophy by 8 wickets
They beat us in the 2014 World T20 by 7 wickets

Over the last five years, they have won the biggest meeting of the year each time.
